A universal stop along the mother road
Raised in Oklahoma and Texas, Jan grew up surrounded by the culture and landmarks of Route 66. “Route 66 has always been a part of my life,” she says. “There are so many places my family would stop on road trips.” Instead of focusing on one specific location, her artwork highlights a moment every traveler shares: stopping to refuel.
But this isn’t your typical roadside scene. Jan’s 3D piece features a friendly alien making a pit stop at a gas station — or perhaps a spaceship fuel dock. Viewers will be able to pose as if they’re helping fuel up the alien’s craft, becoming part of the artwork in a fun, interactive way. “I wanted to remind everyone that the open road is for all travelers, and everyone is welcome,” she explains.
Details that draw you in
Jan’s work is known for its humor and heart, but also for the small touches that make people stop and look closer. “I’m always looking for that extra bit of detail — something that makes someone say ‘wow, that’s cool,’” she says. Whether it’s the glint of metal or the texture of fur, she adds layers of realism that make her imaginary worlds feel tangible.
Learning from the global street art family
More than just an exhibition, the World Street Painting Festival is a gathering of global talent. For Jan, it’s an opportunity to grow. “I admire every person I’ll be painting next to,” she says. “There’s no greater gift than learning from artists who’ve lived in different countries and cultures.”
As Joplin continues its three-year celebration of the Route 66 Centennial, Jan’s imaginative and welcoming alien reminds us that adventure belongs to everyone — no matter where you’re from, or what planet you’re headed to next.
You can see Janet and her intergalactic creation come to life in real time during the World Street Painting Festival, June 4–7 at Schifferdecker Park in Joplin. Don’t miss your chance to meet the artist, snap a photo with her 3D alien pit stop, and be part of this one-of-a-kind celebration of art, imagination, and Route 66.
